  Chapter One

Gil Ra looked around trying to put on a good face and a bright smile. This was supposed to be a second chance in life. But she couldn’t stop thinking about the past and what she had left behind.

Being abducted by aliens sounded so much like the title of a cheap sci-fi movie, and yet it had happened to her.

That night, when she had decided she couldn’t take it any longer, the mocking, the loneliness and the feeling she had failed the only person that depended on her completely had become overwhelming, and that night she had decided to end it all.

She had left everything ready, no unfinished matters, no one to worry about her and surely no one to mourn her. And so, she had walked in the middle of the night, to the highest bridge she was able to find near the tiny room, she had been living in.

She walked out to the middle of the bridge unspotted, or so she had thought, however, suddenly she was surrounded by two men.

“Gil Ra?” one of them asked, in a strange accent.

The night was dark, and she was far from the nearest lamppost, so she wasn’t able to see the person talking to her. All she could tell was that he was wearing some sort of tunic and that there was another one like him standing behind her.

Startled, she tried to walk around the man in front of her, without uttering a word, but he had no plans on letting her escape.

A hand that looked a lot more like a claw stopped her immediately, and the other man standing behind her closed the distance between them and quickly injected something at the base of her neck.

With one last sob, she saw the world disappear before her eyes for the last time.

Later… she had no idea how much later, she woke up feeling dizzy and with her mouth dry as the desert. Slowly, she opened her eyes, as the memories of what had happened crossed her mind. She could hear sobs and mumbles somewhere around her, but she could sense she was alone, wherever she was.

Realizing she was in a cell, on board of an alien vessel, to be sold as a sex slave had been quite a shock.

Along with her were six other human females and a few others, of species she had never even thought, might exist.

The creatures that had kidnapped her were like humanoid lizards, and the one in charge of them was particularly vicious and cruel.

They all soon found out there was no point resisting them since they could easily subdue them through pain.

Gil Ra decided to play along and put on her best face to the strange world she was going to be taken to. Her plans hadn’t changed, just the scenario where she would enact them.

So, she smiled, she obeyed, and she looked at everything as if none of it was actually happening to her.

By the time they arrived at their destiny, a planet called Zuvrak, she had become quite an expert in presenting a friendly face to the world, despite her feelings inside.

In her darkest moments, she wondered if her parents knew she had gone missing. And if they did, what were their feelings about it. It was a useless exercise, and she knew it. After all, her parents had thrown her out of the house and ordered her never to come back. She had shamed them, and the family and they would consider her dead from that moment on. So, there was nothing to wonder about.

“Hey, girl, how are you feeling?” Miranda, one of the other girls asked her, as they were guided to the palace to meet the king.

She shrugged and smile. “I’m fine, thank you for asking. “If the other men on this planet look a bit like these, it won’t be that bad.” She tried to jest, and Miranda chuckled along with her.

“Yes, I know what you mean.”

The city they arrived too was monochromatic, and the fashion designer inside her quivered with distaste. It was a dull place, with nothing to break the monotony of the tall buildings, all built with some sort of grayish metal that added nothing to the area’s poor light.

Their sun seemed to be very far from the planet, and the low temperatures appeared to be a part of that. It was a good thing they had given them some cloaks to cover themselves. The formless, thin tunics they were wearing were no protection against the cold outside.

Incredibly and against all of their expectations, they were received as guests of honor at the palace.

According to the king, a man extremely handsome and with an imposing character that inspired instant respect, they had been brought to the planet to become the soul mates of some of their inhabitants. They were running out of the female population, and their greatest concern was the possibility of extinction.

They searched for a long time to find suitable partners for breeding, and apparently, the human females are the only ones they are compatible with.

The whole idea sounded too perfect to be true. Gil Ra had long stopped believing in fairy tales, and if those supposed soulmates were to be your other half, there was no chance she would be mated. Not that she would want such a thing. She didn’t deserve a happy life, not after all she had done in her past.

But she pasted a smile on her face and pretended the idea was exciting. She had even been able to talk about the career she had abandoned the year before as if it was the most importan
t thing she had left behind, and apparently, she had been able to convince all of the others.

After the greeting chat, they were invited to stay at the palace, at least, for the time being, while the king decided how he would introduce them to the rest of the population, in order to find them all the so-called soulmates.

The following morning, she was still in her room, trying to decide whether to join the others for breakfast or stay in her room. The place was so big; she could have fit her room back on Earth several times. It was actually a suite, with bedroom, bathroom, living room, and dressing room; it was so big, it was easy to feel lonely in it.

She had put on one of the suits they had given them; hating the formless piece of clothing and wishing, she had her sewing basket with her, in order to do something about it, when a knock on the door startled her.

Curious, she pressed the button that opened the door, just to find Miranda there.

“Good morning. I thought you might want some company on the way to the dining room.” She said with a bright smile. “The other ones have already gone downstairs.” She informed.

“Thank you, it’s very kind of you.” she said, putting on her usual mask on, as she smiled.

Miranda offered her the arm and both women left the room to meet the others.

When they got there, they were informed they would be shooting a video that would be transmitted to the rest of the planet so they would be able to mate all of the five women that had been brought.

“That sounds exciting, don’t you think?” Miranda asked her, smiling. According to what the woman had told them all the day before, she had left a lonely life as an astronomy teacher behind and she had decided to embrace the possibility of a better life the Zuvrakians were offering, with all her heart.

Gil Ra sort of envied her and wished she could feel just a little bit like her.

The shooting of the video was amusing, and for a while, Gil Ra was able to forget her reality and enjoy the moment. When it was her turn to talk to the cameras, she repeated the story she had told them the day before, that she had been a South Korean, fashion designer student that she had no family left back home. She didn’t give any other details, and fortunately, no one asked for more.

By the time they finished shooting the video, it was lunchtime, and the joyful ambient continued through the meal.

Like most of the things on the planet, the food, though delicious, was too boring. There wasn’t the variety most of them had always been used to, and they were trying to convince Patricia, who used to work as a chef, to visit the kitchen and see what she could do about it. “Girls… I have no idea how to use their ingredients. I’m sure they are nothing like what I’m used to.” she protested, but they could tell that was exactly what she wanted to do.

“That’s one more reason for you to go there. You can ask them to show you.” Anya insisted, with a wicked smile. She was an agronomist, used to working in low temperatures, so she felt quite at home on the cold planet.

Patricia chuckled, but her friends could tell she was considering the idea.

By the time lunch was over, everybody had gone looking for something to do, and Gil Ra decided to go back to her room.

“Is there anything I can help you with, Víf Gil Ra?” One of the servants asked her, as she was about to leave the dining room.

She was about to say no when she felt the urge to draw she always had whenever she was feeling a bit restless. “You don’t happen to have paper and pencils, right?” she asked the man, but the puzzled expression on his face told her everything.

“I’m not sure what the meaning of those words is, but if you tell me what you need it for, I might be able to find a suitable substitute.” The man replied, eager to help.

“I wanted to draw a bit, you know… put images on paper, or any other kind of surface.” She explained as best as she could.

He nodded. “I believe I can help you. Why don’t you follow me?”

She agreed, and he guided her through a few halls until he stopped before a door. “The late Queen liked to draw as well, but we don’t have what you call paper here.” The man explained, showing her instead a big, tactile screen. She used this to draw. “Here are all the instruments you'll need to put the image on the screen and save them into this folder." The man explained, with simple instructions.

It wasn’t paper, but for what she was able to see, this was a lot better.

  "Thank you; this seems perfect."

"If you need help, don't hesitate to call. Just use the communication system on the wall." He said and nodded; he left her alone to play with her new toy.

Picking up one of the electronic pencils the man had given her, she started working. It was so easy to draw and express the thousands of ideas she had swirling in her mind, she forgot about time and space, completely submerged in that special world, fashion had always been for her.

She was still there, working on a night dress when the same servant walked in.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but your friends are looking for you at evening’s meal.” He told her.

“Is it that late?” she let out a small cry.

“I’m afraid so.” The man said with a smile.

“Thank you for letting me know. I lost track of time.”

“It’s a pleasure helping you.” the man helped her go back to the dining room through the labyrinth of halls, and she thanked him once more.

“The room is at your service, Víf Gil Ra. Just let me or any of my colleagues know that you want to go back there and we’ll help you until you know your way.” The man suggested.

“It’s very kind of you. I had a wonderful time drawing.”

The man nodded and disappeared through the door.

“Gil Ra… we were starting to think you had lost your way here.” Miranda said as she joined them.

“I lost track of time.” She looked around.

All of the other girls were there, except for Sasha that had been taken by Asgar, the captain of the vessel that brought them to this planet, as his pupil. She had been living with him since their arrival.

The meal was served as the girls chatted about all they had lived ever since their abduction and they all agreed they could have had worse luck than coming to this planet. So far, they had been treated fairly well and with nothing but respect. Of course, things could change, but they actually didn’t think they would.

After the meal, they all went back to their rooms, and Gil Ra decided to take a long bath. They had been told how to use the huge bathtub, and tonight she could use it. Her tense body needed a way to relax.

  Chapter Two

Colborn returned home when the night fell, feeling a bit restless. He had been feeling like that ever since Asgar had brought the new group of women into the vessel.

Perhaps, that was the reason he had stayed away from the women ever since. He wasn’t sure he wanted a soulmate. Not at this stage of his life.

He had no family ties, his parents had died when he had reached the majority, and he had grown used to being alone. That way he only had to care for himself and no one else. He always thought his patients were more than enough and he had never seen any reason for changing that.

As a doctor, he understood the importance of having more females in the population; he just didn’t think he had to participate personally.

Now that the king had asked him to investigate the conversion thoroughly, he had the perfect excuse to stay away from the women and dedicate all of his time to it, and he planned on doing it so.

Tired, he stretched his tall body and walked straight to the bathing room. He needed a long bath, to gather up all his strength to go hunting for myths surrounding the soulmates and their possible conversion. He knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task, considering how little information there was on the subject, but he understood the king’s need to find answers.

Though he wasn’t on the investigation field, he would love to find out why his people had stopped engender
females. For no apparent reason, the number of born females had been decreasing for the past hundred rotations to the point; it was considered a miracle to engender one these days. With no females, it was impossible to make a species persist in time and a few rotations ago, Brynjar, the king, had decided it was time to look for possible mates out of their species.

After a long time, they had finally had a breakthrough, when Asgar found the human females on board of a Slythonian vessel. He had known immediately they were possible mates and he hadn’t been wrong. So far, four of the eight women had been mated, including Eleanor, the reason the king was even considering the conversion.

The woman was unable to walk, and that problem could be an issue for people like them who were able to heal themselves and grow almost any parts of their bodies when needed. Turning her into a drogon would make her treat her injured spine, and she would be able to walk with no problem.

The only catch was, no one really knew what the conversion implied or how dangerous it could be for the female in question. The human females were a lot weaker than the drogons’ females. There was no way of knowing if they would be able to survive such a thing.

After the long, hot bath, he finally left the bathing room, ready to order some food from the nearest refectory, doing all his best to ignore the restlessness he was still feeling.

When he pulled up the screen to order his meal, he noticed the notification of a new official message from the palace.

He pressed it automatically, expecting to find a personal message from the king, regarding his new mission.

But it wasn’t. The king had sent him the video with the presentation of the new women.

Growling, he considered the possibility of not watching it, but he simply couldn’t.

He rubbed his face with his hand and waited, feeling his heart thundering inside his chest like it never had before.

One by one, the women were appearing on the screen displayed in front of him, as they talked a bit about themselves, but he wasn’t able to focus in any of them. That was until she came up.
